National Poetry Month was launched by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 and has grown to be both a national and international celebration of poetry and poets during April each year. The enduring power and relevance of poetry across centuries is reflected in this poem, which was written more than two centuries ago by Emily Dickinson; in a time of restricted travel, poetry can transport us.
There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away,
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry –
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll –
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears a Human soul.
