Saturday, Dec. 10, is UN Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day is an annual commemoration of the signing of the UN Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

This year's theme is "Stand Up for Someone’s Rights Today", and the UN is calling not on nations, but on us, as individuals, to stand up for human rights in our communities and across the globe.

“At a time of enormous turmoil and rapid change, the values which uphold peace across the world are too important to be left to international institutions and governments alone. It is within the power of every woman, man and child to stand up for respect and tolerance and push back the violence and hatred which threaten our world.”

The library has a new display of books in support of UN Human Rights Day. We are showcasing books celebrating individual champions of human rights and books calling attention to just some of the ways that human rights are violated or threatened. As  believers in the power of stories to both heal and challenge, we also selected a few novels and films that tell powerful stories of individuals who face, survive, and overcome threats to their rights and their lives.

A big thanks to our Library Assistant, Loren Hutner, for putting together this display.
